nutrinote 2015 nutrition software 3.5.0 review by Kenneth Therkelsen (Nov 10, 2013)
Nutrinote 2010 is a fairly complete piece of software but, after using it for over six months, I have the following comments:
1. When using entered groups of food (or "Recipes"), the exact recipe items are entered and cannot be changed. This is annoying as, for example, you may have Fiber One cereal, almond milk, a banana and orange juice as recipe "Breakfast 1". But if your banana is 150 grams instead of the, say, 120 grams in the recipe, you can't just change the 120 to 150. You have to make an additional, manual, entry for "Banana... 30 grams" to make up the difference. And it's worse if you had, say, a banana that was only 100 grams. There's no way to make a negative entry so you must abandon the recipe and make each included food entry separately. Not very useful since "Recipe" items often do not have consistent quantities from day to day.

2. When entering a new food item, even though you base it on an existing food template, entry of the new serving size does *not* make an automatic proportional change to the nutritional values in the template data. You must re-enter each one (unless the new serving size exactly matches the existing template serving size). Very annoying.

3. The is no provision in the software to make a *calories burned" entry (usually from some model of heart rate monitor, etc.) to override the value provided by the program. Alternatively, you could change your exercise minutes until the correct calories burned value is achieved but then you've made an improper entry for exercise time... and it's often useful to look at the (correct) amount of exercise time per given time period. You are forced to choose between correct time, correct calories burned or creating a brand new exercise on a regular basis (the new exercise is needed to produce both the correct time and calories burned). More than annoying, it is so unnecessary to implement this in this fashion... especially when it's so well known that different people (as well as even the same person) expend different amounts of energy with the same exercise time every day.

4. The software is *very* slow to load. Running in my Windows virtual machine under OS X (10.8.5) on an iMac with 1.5GB of memory allocated to the VM, it typically takes 1-2 minutes to complete startup. Not sure why but maybe its simply doing an extensive (checksum, CRC, hash code?) verification of the database.

5. Backup options are fairly archaic with no option for utilizing "My Computer" network drives (which is exactly what a person with network drives would like to do. Only a physical USB flash drive can be used for secure backup. The other option that would be nice is to be able to use a Cloud backup system such as Dropbox.

6. I'm suspicious of this software as a quick check of its execution parameters (using Windows Task Manager) shows it (task TR6.exe) utilizing upwards of 50% of my machine (and often 10-20%), when it's not even being accessed! Why this should be so is totally beyond me. I think it should be at 0-1% max when it's not actively being used for data entry.

7. Finally, it's pretty clear to me that this software has not been maintained for years (note the name: nutrinote "2010"). This is a conclusion based both on the software's title as well as the fact that my questions/comments to the support email address have not yet (after over 6 months) been responded to and the old style backup options available (see #5, above) as any current developer would've allowed for using, for example, Dropbox (at least) as a cloud backup option at this point.

Conclusion: at a price of around $50, this software is definitely not giving the user enough value and it would be more fairly priced at about $15-$20.
